After graduating from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in Psychology my mission was to explore all of the opportunities this degree presented in order to find my niche. Along the way I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing therapeutic relationships with youth and adults struggling with various difficulties, while learning more about my own strengths.
My path of self-discovery eventually led me to Boston, Massachusetts where I began to learn about Autism Spectrum Disorders. Receiving intensive, ongoing training in Applied Behavioral Analysis I spent 7 years working with children diagnosed with an ASD.
As an ABA therapist/consultant I was fortunate to work with a team of professionals including Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Biomedical Practitioners, Auditory Intergration Specialists, Music Therapists, classroom teachers and educational assistants. This taught me to appreciate the importance of a holistic and comprehensive approach in the treatment of ASD. However, it wasn’t until I began mainstreaming with my clients that I realized something essential was missing. Although the children I taught were keeping up academically with peers, their social difficulties were obvious, frustrating and painful to witness. It was then that I learned about RDI and the possibility of remediation.
While attending a 2-day conference presented by Drs. Steven Gutstein and Rachelle Sheely in 2002, I was shocked at how little I knew about ASD despite my previous 7 years of continuous learning. The information, based on current developmental and ASD research, made so much sense. I was easily able to relate it to every child I had taught and the difficulties they continued to struggle with. In a matter of those two days I made the decision to embark on becoming an RDI Consultant.
Since becoming committed to the RDI Program, I’ve had the priveledge of empowering parents; of helping them to better understand ASD and their child; of guiding families out of crisis and attaining previously derailed dreams and goals for their child.
Evidence of emerging meaningful relationships, increased flexibility, competency and an overall enhanced quality of life are defining moments.
